I want to preface this post with an apology. We have not been posting pictures with our posts, and while we realize that this certainly makes the posts harder to read and interact with, in some cases we do not have a choice as the children that we are working with and writing about need to be protected. We ask for your understanding as we continue to try to share with you their lives and what the Lord is doing here in Cancún.
On Wednesday morning I woke up, got ready and left for the staff prayer meeting. While everyone else prayed I thought to myself, “God what should I pray about?” and when my turn came to pray, the first words that came out of my mouth were “Thank you God for bringing me to Cancun.”
These words became only the beginning for what God had prepared for me and even more so for a teenage girl that He was planning on me meeting later that day.
He put in my heart to pray for opportunities to talk about Him with the kids that we were going to visit that morning, and for the words that they needed to hear. So I surrendered my whole day to God and off I left for my next mission.
The kids were playing outside at the park. As soon as they saw the four Back2Back shirts their faces filled with excitement. They ran toward us and gave us hugs. They were so ecstatic to spend some time with us. It is very special to see how giving them our time and attention can make such a big impact in their lives. Every time I am around them, I am reminded of God’s big picture, to care for the orphan child, and how by doing so we bring purpose, not only to the children, but to ourselves.
We kept walking until we found a place to sit. One of the girls was looking at everything that we brought.
They love it when we bring gifts, and she found two Bibles. She told us that she didn’t know how to read but that she had heard before that the Bible says that Jesus is the truth and the life and she wanted to know if it was true.
So, I showed her John 14:6: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
She wanted me to read more, so I read Psalm 34. She payed such close attention to every word and then three other kids joined in the reading. I could see how their broken hearts were fighting the truth that they were hearing but I kept going. I knew that the Holy Spirit had been preparing me all day for this moment with this girl.
I finished reading the verse and it was time to play some games, but this girl wasn’t ready to let go of the Bible, she wanted to know more.
She opened the Bible and asked me to read a page, and there it was: God’s plan unfolding right in front of my eyes.
It was the summary of King Solomon’s life, so I began by telling her about when God told Solomon to ask for whatever he wanted. Then I asked her “What would you ask for?” and her answer surprised me, she said “Eternal Life.”
I thought to myself, “This is great, He can give it to you right now.” I explained to her what the Bible says about eternal life and I asked her if she wanted to give her life to God and she said Yes!
You might think that I am giving you the short version of the story but the truth is that it happened this fast. The seeds in her heart were ready for some living water. We had a divine appointment.
Her name was added to the Book of life and I am so thankful that God used me to bring truth into her mending heart. I know that this is just the beginning of her walk with the Lord but I can’t wait to see how God is going to continue to work in her life.
Please join with me in praying for freedom from oppression for this new sister in Christ. Pray that she will be able to hear God’s guidance, and that she will make God her refuge and truth. Pray for openness for the Gospel and discipleship in her surroundings.
Thank you for caring for these children. You can already see how God is using you and us to bring hope into their lives!
